Bicycle Safety

Here are some friendly tips for safe bike riding:
- Always wear a helmet.
- When on the road, always pay attention to cars, pedestrians, and other bikers around you.
- Stay to the far right when possible and do not weave between traffic.
- If you have not ridden a bike for awhile, practice in a level, empty, and safe area with no obstacles. A cul de sac or parking lot is an ideal place to become acquainted with your new hybrid bike.
- Always check tires for proper inflation before riding and make sure all components and accessories are bolted on properly.
- Always yield to motor vehicles even if you have the right away - they have much more protection than you do!
- Take your bike in for a yearly tuneup for better performance.
- Stretch before long rides to prevent muscle soreness and make sure to bring water to stay hydrated.
- Wear warm clothing, especially gloves and wool socks, when the weather is cold. Remember that the air feels colder when you are moving at a high rate of speed.
- Make sure to obey all traffic laws on the road and any rules and regulations on a trail.
- When on a trail, yield to faster riders and stay to the right.
- Never operate a bicycle under the influence of alcohol or any other drugs.
- Do not ride your bike on highways and any other roads with higher posted speed limits.
- Take advantage of designated bike lanes where available but remain concious of traffic.
